Monroe County Campers donate a washer/dryer to Camp
June 23, 2025

Every year, Monroe County 4-H members attend summer camp right here in our county at Camp Si Colborn on Mark Twain Lake. The third week of June will find upwards of 100 campers enjoying programing from the Department of Conservation, Consolidated Electric, Kayaks, swimming, campfires and more. They are learning and building core memories that will last a lifetime. We are very blessed to have an outstanding facility right here in our county. Si Colborn Group Campgrounds sleeps 64 campers and a staff of volunteers. We add to that several day campers since they're local to the families of our county.
One of the important pieces of experience a 4-H has is participation in Community Service. Over the years we have done many different things. Last year, campers made jumpropes for the Operation Shoebox project. In past years, we have made blankets for EMS workers, chew toys for dogs at the Humane Society and much more. Ideally, we like to do projects that benefit the campground as often as possible to show the park how much we appreciate the facility.
This year's project was decided on last year. We wanted to replace the washer dryer set that is available to groups renting the facility. Over the last several months we have fundraised through grant applications and soliciting local supporters. About a month before camp, we reached our goal.
We reached that by the Paris Patriots club applying for the `Shaping Rural Communities' grant sponsored by FCS Financial. This grant is available to 4-H Clubs or FFA chapters that are trying to bring positive change to their community.
The groups who helped make this project possible are: Consolidated Cares (Mexico), Farm Credit Services (Macon), Jim and Jeanne Mitchell, Dustin and Amanda Bodine, Mark Twain 4-H in memory of Trenton Minks, and the family of David and Mickey Charlick.
FCS personally presented their check to our group on Wednesday morning. Kyle Eckler from the Macon office presented to Amelia Klenke, representative of the Park.
